A group of seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
