Astronaut Shares Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.
