Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
