Christantus Uche Fuels Straightforward Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Without star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be enough to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with knee injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
