Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
