Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
