"Do you know when you'll be interviewing Haim?" a message reads. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're far from alone. Several high-profile supporters have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the best bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos often show them marching in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'After your show, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire others to start a band."

"Therefore all gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I watch the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound confidence called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But Haim will always be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
