TikTok Influencers Driving Unofficial Market for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Investigational Drug Acquiring Traction Online

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these accounts directly for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers promote the substance there before redirecting customers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding Retatrutide

This medication is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients lose up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Express Worries

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting substances of uncertain source.

Several professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Enforcement

Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.

Platform Response and Material Removal

Based on TikTok, the service has taken down problematic material and prohibited related keywords and query recommendations. The company stated it was committed to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays groups with numerous of users, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within moments of joining one group, a seller shared WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Information and Costs

Inside these groups, posts display black plastic packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Measures

A representative for the messaging service said it regularly moderated harmful content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Professional Warnings

“People are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in interest to recent price rises for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet approved … may subject users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
