Pick of the Week
The Substance Film
The filmmaker's daring commentary examines the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers an inspired portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into presenting an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and terrifying procedure titled "The Substance". This produces a youthful duplicate portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a steadily more parasitic dynamic between them. This Friday, Paramount Plus

Presence
The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities with this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly through the eyes of a ghost. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their recent residence, the filming device – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and it looks like protective of her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that may be unexpected. October 11th, multiple showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom via this self-referential adventure. He acts as an egotistical film star playing himself who agrees to a million-dollar gig to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for billionaire superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to spy on the potential kingpin, the actor's unconventional method is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, on Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror stands strong without requiring a sequel. Taking place in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has rendered the local kids frightened. After Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel
This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between God and Mammon, the winner is obvious for Mammon in Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who declares early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, yet the lead actress succeeds to show the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, on Film4
This Espionage Thriller
This week's additional entry from the filmmaker delivers a espionage tale as tight as the polo necks used by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked with uncovering a traitor within their ranks from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
